It seems that reason has prevailed and the EU have decided that having a war criminal as their unelected figurehead is not a great idea.

Of course the smug one will no doubt say he was never interested in the job but Angela Merkel seemed to think he was and quietly torpedoed his bid.Â It seems Tony’s Teflon shield doesn’t work against women….

Another day in Baghdad – at least another 90 innocent people die. Over six years since Operation Enduring Freedom was launched against a background of lies and falsehoods and the only thing Iraq is enduring is misery.

Despite the complete and abject failure of this illegal war Blair shows no shame or regret as he continues his attempts to become the first unelected President of the EU. This attempt needs to be stopped – the only place Blair should be appearing in the EU in the Hague facing criminal charges.

A petition started to display objection to the incredible idea that this man can stay in politics has already attracted 40,000 signatures. While is unlikely to prevent the inevitable happening it will send a strong signal that for many people this is an unacceptable idea.

Sarkozy: Blair faces strong opposition as EU President

The diminutive French President Nicholas Sarkozy last night admitted that Blair faces strong opposition from some member states opposed to the election of the failed UK Prime Minister as first President of the EU.

Sarkozy, who has long enjoyed a close relationship with Blair, had previously said that he favoured a â€œstrong and charismaticâ€ figure to head the 27-nation bloc.

However last night he addedÂ â€œPersonally I believe in a Europe that is politically strong and embodied by a person. But the fact that Great Britain is not in the single currency remains a problemâ€.

French commentators said that the remarks made by Sarkozy to Le Figaro appeared to be dumping Mr Blair as a liability.Â This is something Blair must be getting used to by now.

It might also be plausible that Sarkozy does not fancy the idea of the first EU President being embroiled in the upcoming Iraq inquiry.
