Sarkozy, who has long enjoyed a close relationship with Blair, had previously said that he favoured a “strong and charismatic” figure to head the 27-nation bloc.

However last night he added  “Personally I believe in a Europe that is politically strong and embodied by a person. But the fact that Great Britain is not in the single currency remains a problem”.

French commentators said that the remarks made by Sarkozy to Le Figaro appeared to be dumping Mr Blair as a liability.  This is something Blair must be getting used to by now.

It might also be plausible that Sarkozy does not fancy the idea of the first EU President being embroiled in the upcoming Iraq inquiry.
